British APCO is involved in several initiatives relating to the Public Emergency Call Service - more commonly known as dialling 999.
We also work closely with EENA - the European Emeregncy Number Association - and NENA - the Association that champions 9-1-1 in North America. Here's a little about the work we do:
999 Apps

The use of apps on mobile phones and mobile devices has increased hugely in recent years. And, in the world of Public Safety where a direct connection to the 999 system brings benefits to the user, the emergency service or public safety provider and to the operator BT.
British APCO is taking a significant role in ensuring a standardised approach to certifying apps before they can be considered for direct connection in the 999 system. Find out more about the work we do here - and the process that we lead for the accreditation of any Apps that developers are looking to connect directly to the 999 system.
999-112 Liaison Committee

The 999 system is supported by the 999-112 Liaison Committee which provides technical and operational oversight of the UK’s Public Emergency Call Service. British APCO has long been an active supporter of the 999LC and is a standing member of the Committee. More recently British APCO has provided material support; two of our trustees hold key positions on the Committee - Matt Leat as Chair and Darryl Keen as the Vice-Chair.
NG999 White Paper
British APCO launched a white paper
based on inputs gained from our NG999 Round Table event held in London in February 2023. Attendees represented end users, commercial organisations, and government agencies; all our key stakeholder groups were present and actively participated. This built on previous work back in 2019.
This white paper highlights the once in a generation opportunity for a step change in the way 999 can exploit new technology and we ask for clear Government leadership to make it happen. More around both White Papers can be found here.
